ENVY

Sat 20th Jan

w/ Voys, TVO, Natalie

Joining Natalie in the booth for the first party of 2024 are Lewisham’s Voys and Ayrshire’s Ruaridh TVO. Sharing a taste for the dubbier, bass driven end of electronic music, both bring decades of immersion in all aspects of DIY music culture. As Souvenir, Voys and collaborator Elle Andrews bring a slew of influences from their South London backgrounds to create some of the most richly layered, absorbing club and home listening experiences; check their Trilogy Tapes and Ransom Note mixes as a jumping off point for a deeply rewarding sonic deep dive. As Voys, Claire’s mixes for Phonica and ENVY reveal the more stripped back n’ swung side of her dj style, with the former described by Voys herself as ‘a free form wander between deconstructed garage, footwork, DnB and experimental electronics’. Voys’ recent mix for ENVY’s Clyde Built Radio show nailed the brief so damn perfectly we knew we had to bring her to the club for some dancefloor action. Whilst solidly known for a multitude of production credits, either solo as The Village Orchestra or as part of the genre-defining electronica trio Marcia Blane School for Girls, Ruaridh TVO is no stranger to the decks. Having been a long term resident at Numbers in days past and laying down many seamless mixes for the likes of FACT Mag, Ruaridh TVO was one of the first DJs on these fair isles to successfully spin an aural narrative from the mechanical urFunk of Detroit Techno, mid to late 00s UK Bass and the percussive charge of contemporary RnB and Dancehall. But as with any true marksman, Ruaridh can apply his deft touch to any relevant musical interest, whether it’s concrète drift or shattered techno abstractions. We’ve been keen to bring this pair together since the lockdown streaming era (Voys guested on Ruaridh TVO’s rather excellent further_in series), so we’re hyped to start 2024 with this party. This is one for the heads – and feet!
