w/ Apiento
Apiento aka Paul Byrne runs the invaluable ‘Test Pressing’ blog, a platform that has been central in the representation and archiving of club culture and music in recent times. The ‘Test Pressing’ mix series has proved to be one of the most consistent, yet versatile series amongst an often-saturated online world, welcoming everything from the darker psychedelic sounds of Vladimir Ivkovic to the breezy house grooves of Telephones to old school Ibiza legends such as Alfredo. As with the mix series, the Test Pressing radio show on London’s NTS pushes a diverse palate of sound while always maintaining a certain balearic aesthetic to all the music they play. Both Apiento and Test Pressing have begun to receive the acclaim they deserve receiving bookings across the globe, as well as hosting the infamous Sunrise Sessions at Tisno’s Love International festival.
Recently their passion for all things balearic was consolidated in the publication of a short booklet of interviews carried out by Robert Harris with Ibiza DJs from 1976-1988, what are often seen as the golden years of the white island. Before the days of €10 bottles of water and V.I.P areas, it is easy to forget that between the 50s and 80s almost every resident of Ibiza was seeking sanctuary from one form of persecution or another. The atmosphere is often described as one huge celebratory sigh of relief. The interviews in this booklet discuss the conditions which allowed the island to become what it was, myths and legends which surround it, these various selectors and the origins of the ‘balearic beat’.
Apiento himself is a wicked producer with two consecutive EPs released last year on Beautiful Swimmer, Ari Goldman’s ‘World Building’. The first a dubbed out Slow-mo house record perfect for ‘humid days poolside & night drives on the strip’. The second a smooth street soul cut with a killer sunrise acid bass featuring the vocals of Los Angeles’ Harriet Brown. He also makes up one half of ‘Open Space’ alongside Sade’s producer Andrew Hale and ‘Hot Weather’ with Lexx.
With Apiento’s deep knowledge of music and passion for club culture, we can’t wait to hear what he has in store for us!
